SA: Second patient being checked for SARS in Adelaide hospital

ADELAIDE, April 23 AAP - A second person is undergoing tests in the Royal AdelaideHospital for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

Yesterday, a 23-year-old man who arrived from Malaysia was isolated in the hospitalbecause of a fever.

He was said to be responding well to treatment and while tests were continuing, healthauthorities believed it was unlikely he had SARS.

Today, Health Minister Lea Stevens said a second person was also in isolation at thehospital after flying in from Bangkok.

"That person has been diagnosed with pneumonia, which is not uncommon, but the hospitalis also now doing tests to see whether in fact there's SARS behind that," Ms Stevens toldABC radio.

The minister said the decision to isolate the two patients highlighted the move bylocal health authorities not to take any chances with possible SARS cases.

Previously, 23 people had been checked in Adelaide for the pneumonia-like virus butall proved to have either the flu or pneumonia.

SARS has killed more than 230 people and infected some 4,000 worldwide since it firstemerged in southern China in November.
